(NL) Het kasteel van Stolberg staat op een kalksteenrots in het midden van de historische oude stad. Reeds in de 12e eeuw bouwde de ridder Reinardus von Stalburg op deze plaats een versterkte hofstede. Het kasteel werd voor het eerst genoemd in een document uit 1118. Tegen het einde van de 18e eeuw was het kasteel in verval geraakt. Een zware aardbeving in 1756 had enorme schade aangericht. In 1887 kocht de Stolbergse fabriekseigenaar Moritz Kraus (1838-1915) het verwoeste kasteel en herbouwde het met stijlelementen van het historisme. Na de voltooiing van het "nieuwe" kasteel schonk hij het domein in 1909 aan de burgers van Stolberg. Tegenwoordig dient het kasteel als locatie voor culturele evenementen. Het kasteel herbergt ook de schilderijenverzameling van de stad en een museum over de plaatselijke geschiedenis en ambachten.
(UK) Stolberg Castle sits atop a limestone rock in the middle of the historic old town. As early as the 12th century, the knight Reinardus von Stalburg built a fortified courtyard on this site. The castle was first mentioned in a document in 1118. By the end of the 18th century, the castle had fallen into disrepair. A large earthquake in 1756 had caused severe damage. In 1887, the Stolberg factory owner Moritz Kraus (1838-1915) bought the destroyed castle and rebuilt it with stylistic elements of historicism. After the completion of the 'new' castle, he donated the site to the citizens of Stolberg in 1909. Today the castle serves as a venue for cultural events. The castle also houses the town's collection of paintings and a museum of local history and crafts.
(DE) Mitten in der historischen Altstadt thront die Burg Stolberg auf einem Kalksteinfelsen. Bereits im 12. Jahrhundert errichtete der Ritter Reinardus von Stalburg an diesem Standort eine befestigte Hofanlage. Die Burg wurde erstmalig urkundlich erwähnt im Jahre 1118. Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts war die Burg dem Verfall preisgegeben. Ein großes Erdbeben im Jahre 1756 hatte schwere Schäden angerichtet. 1887 erwarb der Stolberger Fabrikant Moritz Kraus (1838-1915) die zerstörte Burg und baute sie mit Stilelementen des Historismus wieder auf. Nach der Fertigstellung der ‚neuen‘ Burg schenkte er die Anlage 1909 den Stolberger Bürgern. Heute dient die Burg als Veranstaltungsort kultureller Veranstaltungen. Die Burg beherbergt außerdem die Gemäldesammlung der Stadt und ein Heimat- und Handwerkermuseum.
